Why Local Nonprofits Matter More Than Ever

Local nonprofits strengthen communities, support families in need, and create measurable impact right where you live. Learn how to give wisely and make your support count.

If you’ve spent any time in a healthy community, you’ve seen the fingerprints of local nonprofits—quietly doing the work many of us depend on without even realizing it.

They feed families. Support veterans. Care for pets. Help seniors age with dignity. Mentor children. Show up after emergencies. Fill gaps that government and traditional systems simply cannot cover.

And what makes local nonprofits especially important is proximity. You can often see the impact firsthand.

When you support a national cause, your generosity may travel far. When you support a local nonprofit, it often helps your own neighbors.

That matters.

Five Things to Check Before Supporting a Nonprofit

1. Confirm legitimacy
Before donating, verify that the nonprofit is a registered tax-exempt organization in good standing. The IRS maintains a searchable database for this purpose.¹

2. Understand the mission
A trustworthy nonprofit should clearly explain what they do, who they serve, and how they create impact. If the mission feels vague, ask questions.

3. Review financial transparency
No nonprofit operates without administrative expenses, but responsible organizations are transparent about where donations go. Annual reports and Form 990 filings can offer clarity.²

4. Look for local community engagement
Healthy nonprofits tend to be visible. Look for volunteer opportunities, partnerships, events, testimonials, and active community involvement.

5. Evaluate leadership and governance
Strong leadership matters. Review board members, executive leadership, and organizational accountability.

How to Help Beyond Financial Giving

Supporting a nonprofit doesn’t always mean writing a check.

Many organizations need volunteers, event help, strategic introductions, professional expertise, marketing support, photography, legal guidance, bookkeeping, or operational help.

Sometimes your skills may be more valuable than your dollars.

Why This Matters

Thoughtful giving strengthens communities.

Local nonprofits often step into spaces where families, seniors, veterans, children, and underserved populations need immediate support. They provide practical help, human connection, and solutions that often feel deeply personal.

The strongest communities are built when people support one another intentionally.

Before you give, take a few moments to vet wisely. When you find an organization doing meaningful, measurable work, your support can create real local change.

Sometimes making a difference begins much closer to home than we think.

My Favorite Non-Profits

Ruth Project
The Ruth Project is a non-profit on a mission to end the modern-day orphan crisis. Through donations and volunteering, we give foster children hope, restore their dignity, and provide care to their foster families. This encouragement helps write new chapters in these children’s stories and change the trajectory of their lives.

Big Hearts Fox Valley
No child should go without the basics. But right here in the Fox Valley, in St. Charles, 339 children in District 303 are experiencing homelessness—and 2,335 more are just one unexpected life experience away from the same reality. Families are being forced to make impossible choices between rent, food, and everyday essentials. And too often, it’s the kids who go without.

Burlington Hampshire Food Pantry
The Burlington-Hampshire Area Food Pantry is a non-profit and charitable organization providing relief for those in need. As a “faith based” pantry, assistance is available to anyone, without regard to age, race, gender, creed, or health, in need of food.

Hampshire Township Historical Society
Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a proud Hampshire High alum, new to town, or just visiting, welcome! The Hampshire Township Historical Society invites you to explore and celebrate the people, stories, and traditions that make our community special. By preserving Hampshire’s past, we inspire its future, ensuring our community’s spirit continues to thrive for generations to come.
